Tofte Charters – Fishing Report 2011

We are now on   Facebook

October

10/10/11 – A strong end to the 2011 lake trout season with a lot of big fish being caught in the last two weeks. The fall colors are still looking great along the shore and there are a few salmon to chase around. However, it won't be long before the weather turns cold for good and it will be time to put the boat away and concentrate on hunting.

September

09/29/11 – This past week was good lake trout fishing, with nice fish being landed and released. Only a few days left in the 2011 lake trout season.

A golden crowned kinglet stopped for a rest on its way south.

09/18/11 – Rainy, foggy, lumpy fall weather on Lake Superior kept us on shore today. Good conditions to help put out the forest fire that burns in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. We experienced smoke and ash from the fire last week, and could see the huge plume of smoke very easily from the lake. It has been significantly better this weekend with the wind switching to the south.

Frequent cold fronts have kept the lake trout from getting into a consistant pattern, making it great fishing one day and tough the next. Hopefully the weather will stabilize giving us great fishing every day for the last 2 weeks of the season.

09/5/11 – Happy Labor Day. Lake trout are scattered, not in one definite pattern lately. Could be to the changing weather conditions every day. High pressure is supposed to dominate the weather all this week. Consistent weather for three days should get the fish in a distinguishable pattern.

August

08/30/11 – Wow, a busy summer and now August is almost behind us and Labor Day Weekend is near. Where does the time go when you are having fun fishing every day? The pre-spawn male lake trout are starting to show up in our catch, so it should´t be long until we have some great fall fishing. Yes I said fall, it seems like summer was just here but now we have cooler temps, migrating birds and the leaves will be changing soon. September has some of the best lake trout fishing of the year and dates are filling in. Call to get your spot booked before the season is over.

July

07/18/11 – Summer is here with some very hot weather. We are keeping cool on the world's largest air conditioner. Warm water is also here and we are seeing a scattering of salmon and suspended lake trout. A challenging time to find fish when they haven't settled into a pattern.

This past week I went fishing with the Art Director for Infisherman Magazine and his family. A perfect day for weather and the fish were biting. Here is one of the nice fish we landed, a 12.5lb 35 inch lake trout. This photo may be used in an up coming issue.

07/5/11 – Happy 4th of July. As usual the Tofte Parade, good food, kids activities and live music were a blast again this year. Lake trout continue to bite, however, we are still waiting for the salmon to show up.

June

06/26/11 – Awesome fish caught today. New boat record at 26lbs - 44". Using teamwork the two young girls reeled it in most of the way. What fun!

06/23/11 – The NE winds have subsided, the waves died down and we were fishing today. Rivers are up and roaring, making a big brown plume out into Lake Superior. That should get the water temps on the rise. Looks like an excellent weather forecast for this weekend.

06/20/11 – A couple of days of rough seas, kept us on shore for most of the weekend. It was a joy to find relatively calm seas today and the fish cooperating in numbers. Check out the nearshore marine forecast for tomorrow and especially Wednesday. Come on up if you want to experience big Lake Superior waves ... we will be admiring them while on shore.

06/17/11 – Even though the spring continues to be a little cool, the lake trout fishing has been hot. Numbers of fish declined slightly this week, but it was made up for in bigger fish. Biggest last week was this nice 36" 13lb lake trout. Water temps are slowly creeping upward from 38F to 39F.

May

05/31/11 – Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend. Friday and Saturday were a little cooler than we would have liked, but Sunday was beautiful. The continuously changing weather this weekend made the bite a little difficult, but I would say we caught our fair share. Memorial Day with big rolling waves on Lake Superior I took the chance to go fishing with the kids. A small inland lake, bobber and a leech. Katie does it again and lands the big one, a 24" walleye.

05/19/11 – Great weather this week and the lake trout are biting. As I say every year they are predictably unpredictable. But once we find them they are willing to bite. The trees are just starting to leaf out and the hillside is coming alive with the spring green color I like so much. For the birders out there, long-tailed ducks are abundant this spring. Spending their summers in the Arctic they migrate through our area in the spring and fall.

Congratulations to the Honeymooners Anna Rose & Wyatt

05/6/11 – First fishing trip of the year and 2 limits of fish in less than 2 hours. Good to have fresh fish in the box and fish boil on the menu for this weekend.

05/5/11 – Officially on the water for the 2011 Charter Season. May the seas be calm and the fish always biting. I am looking forward to another great season on Lake Superior.

Caribou Highlands and East Bay Suites will be joining us again this year Monday afternoons* for Charter Fishing Day.
(* There are a couple exceptions Tuesday June 21st and Wednesday July 6th)

April

04/22/11 – Despite the cold spring the boat is out of storage and the process of getting it ready for the big lake is underway. We should be on the water next week.

04/15/11 – Rivers are up and roaring as the inland snow continues to melt. Walleye ice fishing season has come to an end. Now we change gears, get the big boat out of storage and prepare for the summer on Lake Superior. Night time temps are still below freezing so we will have to wait at least 1 more week.

Summer fishing packages are starting to take shape. Lutsen Resort has signed on for Tuesday mornings starting June 7th and I hear some days are already booked up. Lutsen Resort lodging includes the Lutsen Lodge, Cliffhouse Townehomes, Log Cabins, Poplar River Condos, and Sea Villas. Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts has signed on for Sunday mornings starting June 19th. The Bluefin Bay Family includes lodging at Bluefin Bay, Surfside and Temperance Landing. Packages are a 3 Hour Charter Special for those who want to share a charter. If you want the charter for just your group give us a call 866-663-9932.

04/6/11 – Yes I go fishing when I am on vacation. A quick trip to the Rainy River produced this 11 lb walleye. The snow is melting here on the north shore, hopefully we will be on the big lake in less than a month.

11 lb Walleye

March

03/19/11 – Spring ice fishing is heating up and fish are biting. Lake trout season goes until the end of March and hopefully the ice will last until walleye closes on the border lakes April 14th. Ice fishing trips are available as long as we have good ice conditions.
